Surrounded by his loving family, Richard Edwin Harris, 75, passed away in his home at 126 N.
Second Street in Cassopolis on Saturday, January 27, at 8:15 p.m. Dick suffered a stroke on
Christmas Eve and a heart attack on January 25, and chose to spend his final days in the peaceful
comfort of his home.
He was born to Donald and Thelma Harris on May 26, 1925, in a log cabin on Brick Church Road in Cassopolis. Dick graduated from Cassopolis High School in 1943, and married the
former Norma Julian on March 29, 1947.
He worked for 36 years at Tyler Refrigeration in Niles and retired in 1983. He and Norma spent
their retirement years traveling, volunteering and cultivating both local and long-distance friendships, many via the internet.
Dick was a proud World War II veteran, and member of the Army band. He was the founder of
the Cassopolis Volunteer Ambulance Service and served on the Volunteer Fire Department for
28 years, many of those as the assistant tire chief. A tireless volunteer, Dick donated countless
hours to Helping Hands of Cassopolis the Cass County Library, and the Council on Aging in
Cassopolis. He was an active member ot the United Methodist Church in Cassopolis, and a
member of the DeColores organization at the church. Dick was a charter member of the United Nations Breakfast Club.
Dick was proceeded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack. Dick is survived by Norma, his
wife of 53 years; one son, Tom (Beverly); and five daughters, Janet Hawver (Donald), Patty
Harris (David Bolinski), Shelley Adkins (Chuck). Wendy Loupee (John), and Susan Focht (Paul);
15 grandchildren; Paul Harris (Karen), Carrie Coyle (Brian), Clint Harris. Betsy Harris, Megan
Hawver. Jeremiah Bolinski, Alexander Bolinski, Brent Adkins (Kelli), Amber Adkins, Erica
Adkins, Jennifer Loupee, Danielle Loupee, Charles Loupee, Tiffany Focht and Nikki Focht; and
six great-grandchildren, Katie and Abbie Harris, Miranda Stewart, Maggie Coyle, Andrew
Hawver and Oilvia Beathea
Dick often spoke fondly of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved and
treasured.
Friends may visit with Dick’s family Wednesday, January 31, from 7 to 9 PM at the Connelly
Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Cassopolis at
11 a.m. on Thursday, February 1, Reverend Doctor Claudette Haney officiating. A flag
presentation ceremony will be conducted at the memorial service by members of the V.F.W. Post
#10704 and the Efton James American Legion Post #206, both of Cassopolis.
Memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Church or to the Cass District
Library.
