Mabel Esther Schimke, 102, of Bear Lake, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Memorial
Heritage Christian AFC Home in Onekama Township. She was born on November 29, 1898, in
Onekama Township, the daughter of William and Bertha Smith.
Mabel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Onekama, the Ladies Aid at the church,
and a past member of the Farm Bureau. A homemaker for most of her life, Mabel enjoyed
entertaining, flowers, was known for making ice cream every Sunday, and always made room for
anyone that stopped by. She loved cooking, especially her baked beans and date-nut cake
with caramel frosting. Mabel had also worked at the Glen of Michigan in Manistee, as well
as operating her own greenhouse.
Living in three different centuries, Mabel was able to live in her own home with the
help of her family until she was 101 years old.
She is survived by: three sons, Robert (Norma) of Bear Lake, Raymond (Agnes) Schimke of
Onekama, and Richard (Gerry) Schimke of Bear Lake; one daughter, Jeanne Firman of Onekama;
one daughter-in-law, Alice Schimke of Onekama; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren;
seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
On November 4, 1916, in Onekama Township, Mabel married Charles E. Schimke, who preceded
her in death in 1948. She was also preced in death by: one son, Donald Schimke; her
brother, Arthur Smith; and three sisters, Edna Miller, Helen Bowerman and Hazel Marlan.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the Terwilliger
Funeral Home in Kaleva. Interment will be in the Onekama Village Cemetery in the spring.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 12 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church Ladies Aid. Envelopes
are available at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
