SCHIMKE FAMILY TREE 1985
"The Schimke Family Tree" was compiled by DARLENE SCHIMKE WILLBRANDT and PATRICIA SCHIMKE.
The information following was gathered from court house records, census records, cemetery records, and from family members. Therefore there may be a discrepancy on some dates. This tree is complete except for the seventh child of Gottlieb and Louisa, Louise Schimke Henske. If in the future this information becomes available to us it will be passed on to you.
Our thanks to our Aunts, Norma Schimke Anderson for her photography work and to Alma Schimke Gustofson for her hospitality while we researched in Manistee and surrounding area. Also thanks to our mother Margaret Schimke for helping to assemble the books and to all who sent us family information.
Again THANKS!
FAMILY HISTORY
Johann G. Schimke B. 1801 D. 9/25/1881
Married
Anna R. B. 1796 D 11/25/1879
Son is
John Gottlieb Schimke B. 8/5/1828 D. 7/10/1889
August J. Ziechart B. 2/10/1804 D. 10/28/1872
Married
'Anna Christiana Neumann B. 8/26/1807 D. 11/26/1885
Daughter is
Lousia Ernestine Ziechart B. 10/11/1835 D. 3/5/1905
Gottlieb and Lousia were married in Germany, in the Province of Brandenburg, which was in Prussia, possibly the village of Pinnow.
Lousia was the fourth child of eight. She had three brothers; Carl, August, and William and four sisters; Caroline, Anna, Ernestina, and Wilhelmine.
Caroline married Gottlieb's brother, Christian and they remained in Milwaukee. We have been told by some of the older members of the family that Gottlieb had twelve brothers and sisters. To date, I've only
located two. One of which was Christian, who married Caroline Ziechart; Anna (B. 1827) who married Julius Mays (B. 1832 and lived in Onekama). They immigrated to the United States in 1859, first settling in Milwaukee and stayed there for about one year. Baby Anna was born in Milwaukee, WI on Christmas day 1859 and died 11-24-1861. She had been burned with scalded milk. She is buried in Bear Lake Cemetery along with her parents.
It is interesting to note part of Emma Schimke Schmidt's obituary (D. 10-7-1931). It states, "Gottlieb, Lousia and their three children left their home in the Province of Brandenburg, Germany on November 1, 1858, the day that little Minnie was three years old and landed at New York on little Mary's fifth birthday. At fourteen months old, August still a babe in arms learned to walk on the rolling, pitching vessel during its long winter voyage across the Atlantic."
When they first came to Onekama they had to walk from Manistee to Onekama, as there were no roads yet, just trails through the woods. All subsequent trips for supplies were also made on foot.
Gottlieb first worked for the lumber barons until the land was cleared for farming. They built a log cabin along side of Schimke Creek.
An interesting item of family lore was that Gottlieb was in partnership with another man to log off his land and sell the logs in Manistee. This other man always took the logs in and made the deals. Gottlieb confronted the man about the price he was getting and thought they were being cheated. So Gottlieb took the load himself that day. The other man had been cheating right along and when he knew he would be caught up with that day, he set fire to the woods and it spread to Gottlieb log cabin. Lousia, being pregnant for William, went into labor and they put her in a straw-filled wagon and pulled her out into Schimke Creek,
where William was born August 15, 1864.
So when the land was divided up amongst the children, William was given the land first settled on and the new log cabin built to replace the burned out one where he was born.
After that Gottlieb purchased an additional 120 acres across the road and built a beautiful new home which still stands. Gottlieb applied for a Homestead and it was granted to him free and clear on 8-22-1872.
This document was signed by President: of the United States, Usyless S. Grant. He paid $10.00 for 160 acres, which they lived on for five years before getting this land free and clear. You will find a copy in this book. Take notice of the hand-drawn State Seal. This copy was taken from the Manistee County Court House, Manistee, MI court records.
Gottlieb donated land behind the log cabin for the first church to rebuilt in the area. Gottlieb, August and William were charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church in the town of Onekama (Mo. Synod) which is still the family church.
It was interesting going through the Court House Land Records as Gottlieb bought a lot of land. During the I860's, nearly a dozen German and Scandinavian families took up land in Onekama and continued to
come for several decades. According to the first plates of the township, the following people first acquired land between 1860 and 1870. In 1861, Henry Kline and Christian Smith. In 1863; John Carey, Anton Blair,
Lewis Jones and Gottlieb Schimke. At this time there was a natural outlet from Portage Lake to Lake Michigan.
Portage Lake was four to five feet higher than Lake Michigan and it had a lot of streams running down from the surrounding hills around the lake.
There was a water powered saw mill built in the 1840's, but as yet no one was living there, and they built a dam on Portage Creek. It changed hands several times and then in 1860 it was known as "Portage Mills" and then Porter and Company of Chicago, IL.
When they would dam up the water it would flow back onto the lands that some of these early immigrants were trying to farm and so unrest broke out. These immigrants retained a lawyer and tried to get the Mill to keep from flooding the land. An injunction was ordered on May 5, 1870, and was issued ordering the removal of the dam by December 5, 1870. The wording of the writ, to have the dam removed, provided it should be served up on the defendants in person, in the State of Michigan. Mr. Porter
sent an agent from Chicago, IL to transact the business. As the injunction could not be served, it became inoperative and business went on as before.
Not to be thwarted, when the seven months was up the settlers around the lake and their sympathizers nearby began to formulate a plan of action that they had been considering for several years. Under pretense
of forming another company to deal in hardwood, bark, etc., the complainants, (Mr. Pierce was but a figure-head) and Theodore Heiss had bought a piece of land, in 1867 in the north end of section 33, one mile south of Portage Creek. So on April 1, 1871, men with wooden plows and scrapers and hand-made shovels and an occasional ox to help them, they began to dig on the Lake Michigan shore. The sand was held back by a crude curbing that left an excavation about four foot wide. On the Portage Lake side a bulwark held the mass of water at the higher level.
When Porter and Company saw that their future was at stake, they had the men arrested for digging. While this first group of men were being taken to jail, a second group took over where the first group left off, and so it continued. They had to let the first group go; as there wasn't enough room in jail for the second group too.
Manistee Times April 1871
"Police news. Amos Pierce and six others were charged with cutting off water from the Portage Mill. On motion of the prosecuting attorney, NW Nelson, case dismissed. Charles Schroeder and ten others, same charge as above on motion was discontinued.
"As the story goes on, there was a Saturday midnight dance on May 13, 1871, which was attended by fifty people who wished to be present at the grand opening early in the morning. When the log holding the barricade was pulled away by a lone ox, all the water in Portage Lake made a mad rush to get out to Lake Michigan. It carried out masses of large upstanding trees far out into Lake Michigan and tore out enough dirt to make the opening 500 feet wide, and the men had only dug it four feet wide.
When the homesteaders saw what they had done, they were terrified, for they thought all of Portage Lake would flow out to Lake Michigan. However, the following day they became confident again and things were
not so serious as they had seemed at dawn. So on Sunday morning, May 14, 1871, this cut was a channel 500 feet wide and 12 feet deep bringing it level with Lake Michigan and making it a bay to Lake Michigan.
Gottlieb Schimke was one of these men that made the cut along with about 30 others. Today this channel is being taken care of by the Corps of Engineers. There is a Historical Marker in the Village of Onekama about the cut.

Granddaughter of Charles Schimke
Gottlieb Schimke, an old pioneer of this section died on Wednesday about 2 P.M. Mr. Schimke has been sick a long time. "Times Sentinel". Friday July 12, 1889.
Gottlieb is buried in Bear Lake Cemetery, Bear Lake MI.
Retyped by Benjamin Kinsey, 7/1999, from "The Schimke Family Book-1985"
Origin Of Schimke Name
The name Schimke evolved from the biblical given name Simon, Originally it would have been an only name. Spellings varied. As soon as the 1200,S in the present area of southern Poland/Czechoslovakia it was Szymon. Schimon probably was a variation in another area. Simke, Schinke, Schimko also came from Simon. The earliest known uses are: Simke Von Zarrow(1345) of Breslau, Schimke Rathibor (1370), and Schimke Von Kalkow (1381) of Kr. Neisse The ke ending indicates that the Schimke variation is from the area of present East Germany, north of Berlin. Schim is the short form (nickname) of Simon (Schimon). The ending ko is known to be the diminutive form used in the 1200,s in central/eastern Europe. The ke ending is probably similar. Schimke likely became a last name in 1500-1600s.. Researched by Gerald E. Schimke
He is Gottlieb in the 1870 &1880 MI census for Manistee Co. MI. The Schimke Book shows Gottlieb's parents as Johann G and Anna R. In the 1870 Manistee Co. MI census, daughter Louisa is missing. She should be 2 years old.
