On Friday evening, February 17th, at Romeo, Mich., departed this life, DOn Friday evening, February 17th, at Romeo, Mich., departed this life, Dr. Seth L. Andrews, well remembered here as a former medical missionary of the American Board on Hawaii. Few of those who were his co-laborers survive him, but there must be some who were then children whose interest in natural science was kindled by the doctor's enthusiasm as an eager student of nature. The writer himself gratefully acknowledges his personal indebtedness for an introduction, at a very early age, to botany and astronomy as living studies. Dr. Andrews was born June 21, 1809, at Putney, Vt. He received a literary and medical education at Dartmouth College. In 1836 he was married to Miss Parnelly Pierce, and the same year sailed for Hawaii nei with the third missionary reinforcement, arriving at Honolulu April 9, 1837, in the soulstirring times of the great revival. He was located at Kailua, Hawaii, where he found a comfortable home in the stone house built by Rev. Attemas Bishop. His work as physician to the mission families on Hawaii involved, however, frequent arduous and even perilous journeys by land and by sea, which told severely on his health. Hewas accompanied, of necessity, on many of these journeys by his wife and one or more infant children, and so, probably, experienced more of the hardships of missionary life than any other member of the mission. On one occasion he traveled on foot through the woods from Hilo to Waimea with his wife and a son, about four years of age, through almost incessant rain, and unprovided with tent or other shelter by night. During the twelve years of his lesidence at Kailua he buried three infant children, and his faithful and devoted wife. His own health became greatly impaired as the result of a severe attack of dysentery, and finally in 1848 it was deemed necessary for him to return to America. There his health was restored and after three years he married Miss Amelia T. Dike of Pittsford, Vt., in 1852, expecting to resume his mission work here, but as the A. B. C. F. M. were even then drawing their Hawaiian work to a close, it was finally decided that he should not return. He then settled in Romeo, Michigan, where he has resided ever since, practicing his profession for many years actively, and until very recently in a retired way. An earnest worker in his profession, he kept well up with the advance of the times. He remained to the last an interested student of all natural Phenomena. In his home in Michigan he was the authority in Scientific matters of all kinds. One room in his house was dc-

voted to the large collection be had made in Hawaii of plants, minerals, svoted to the large collection be had made in Hawaii of plants, minerals, shells and the implements, kapas, etc., formerly used by the aborigines, and it was a pleasure to him always to exhibit to any who were interested these treasures. To the last he retained bis faculties in a remarkable degree. His interest in the Islands and in everything con nected with them was undiminished, and their prosperity was very near his heart. His last letter to his son. Dr. G. P. Andrews, written only a few days before his death was full of solicitude for the best settlement of our problems. He wrote, " I pray God to remember all that has been accomplished for the salvation of Hawaii, to hear the prayers of his people for seventy years past, and to take into his own hands the direction of affairs and bring about such a result as His infinite wisdom deems to be best." This expression is typical of his life. All things were in the bands of the Infinite, and he was a son who had but to follow the Father's guidance: all things were well that He ordered. As faithful to Christian duty as to the duties of his professional life, he was never absent from his place in the church or the prayer meeting; bis white head and serene, spiritual face spoke as eloquently as his words of a lite bid with Christ in God, of a faith without thought of wavering, a hope already in fruition, a heart of christian love large enough to embrace all for whom Christ died. His end was like a translation. He had not been well for a few days, suffering from shortness of breath. In the evening after family worship, during which he tenderly petitioned tor his beloved Hawaii and the children in Honolulu, he was reclining in an easy chair while his bed was prepared, when Mrs. Andrews saw a little motion of one hand followed by a slight gasp for breath, and the loving heart that had beat so long and faithfully for humanity was still.
